FAQ
What is Matrix?
Matrix is a secure, private and decentralised messaging protocol.
How do I register an account?
- Use Element web or download the client for your platform of choice
- Click the "create an account" button.
- Click the edit button under the "Host account on section" and in the "Other homeserver" box enter matrix.lewisgill.com, then click continue.
- Create a password and username. Ensure you like your username as, like an email, it cannot be changed once created.
- OPTIONAL: Enter your email address. This is not required, but if you do, you will be able to reset your password if you forget it. If you choose not to enter your email at this stage you can always add it later. Note that hotmail is not supported.
- Click register.
- Enter your registration token, if you have not already recieved one, message me and I will send you one.
- If you have chosen to register with an email address, you will be asked to click a verification link sent to your email address. If you have not recieved an email, please check your spam folder.
- That's it! You're ready to enjoy a private, decentralised and free messaging experience!
What rules apply?
The rules listed here apply to users. We are also subject to the the terms and conditions of our server host, Ionos.
When do the rules apply?
The rules apply to all spaces and rooms created under this homeserver, all registered users and all voice/video calls.
Some examples of situations that would be considered to be in breach of the terms and conditions are:
- Inviting users to a room that breaches these rules
- Being part of a room that breaches these rules
- Encouraging someone to breach these rules
- Being registered on a homeserver that directly breaches these rules (i.e. joining a room created on this homeserver whilst being registered on a loli homeserver)
Why can't I join certain rooms?
I restrict access to rooms with a complexity limit greater than 10 (this generally means any rooms with over 1000 members), this is due to the very heavy resource useage these rooms generate.
Can my friend join?
Yes! There are two ways to join the homeserver:
- Have someone vouch for the new user -- If a current server member is willing to vouch for you and we have sufficient resources available at the time, you may join for free.
- Donate -- You can have guaranteed access for a fee of £5/month, this fee helps to pay for the extra resources required to add new members to the server and will gradually be decreased over time and we gain more donators.
How can I report a user?
You can report a user by clicking the "..." icon and selecting "Report" you can file a complaint that will get sent directly to me or the admin of that user's homeserver. If the user or room is not on my homeserver I will not act on a complaint unless it is proven they are direct threat to this homeserver and its users.
